a guilty pleasure playlist

The recent karaoke jaunt was rather timely, as I have been thinking a lot about being a music listener. Much of my job requires spending long periods of time at the microscope and computer, as well as good old fashioned reading and writing, and so the headphones are constantly on. Many friends speculated that I purposely chose a medical specialty based on the ability to listen to music on the job; I can't deny that I was aware of this perk. However, my music taste has been relatively stagnant since approximately 2007. I am still in denial that R.E.M. disbanded. I think it is a combination of getting older and grumpier, sadness about the replacement of physical albums by digital media, and being employed full time. I can't stay up late every night making mixes for anybody and everybody I know (probably much to the relief of my friends and coworkers). Also, some of the best music listening occurs in cars, and I haven't driven for years (Boston, you are welcome for sparing you this public threat). It's true that I love the instant gratification of digital downloads and the ability to purchase a single song rather than an entire album (very useful for an obsessive mix-maker), but I still have reservations. Anyway, I wanted to give a list of songs that are my total guilty pleasures; when I hear these, my first instinct is to get up and sing and frolic (and some of this did happen Friday night):
  • The Smiths - "Ask"
  • Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
  • The Jesus and Mary Chain - "Head On"
  • The Proclaimers - "I'm Gonne Be (500 Miles)"
  • Hefner - "I Took Her Love for Granted"
  • Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack - "Wig in a Box"
  • Pulp - "Common People"
  • Voxtrot - "Raised by Wolves"
  • The Magnetic Fields - "Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits"
  • Passion Pit - "Sleepyhead"
  • When in Rome- "The Promise"
I supposed that if I were more modern, I could have used Spotify so you could also enjoy these. Any of these invariably lift my spirits so I highly recommend them in the face of drudgery. I don't really think you can tell much about an individual based on their guilty pleasures, but it's something that I love to learn about others.

la vida loca

Behold, the Mexican Happy Meal, courtesy of Deep Ellum and consumed with some coercion from friends on Friday night:
Blanco Tequila, Sangrita, Modelo Especial ( L to R)
This will make renting a room in the karaoke bar across the street at midnight seem like a great idea. Which, by the way, it absolutely was. Three hours later, I was singing along to "La Vida Loca" at the top of my lungs. To the few confirmed readers out there: you will appreciate that the evening was kicked off with "Bootylicious" and at the time, I was not sure that I could have handled it.

Third time's a charm

Welcome to my do-over. You may or may not know that I used to keep a blog called "Bottoms Up and Tops Down." This was an anonymous solicitation at a party in 2003; I did not oblige but I thought it was a funny thing to say. It was a good six years. Then I posted at this very address for about a year, and one day I deleted it all and quit. But oh how I've missed you! Here I come crawling back, dear blogosphere.
